In the heart of London's West End, the Old Vic has long stood as an iconic venue. So, when we were asked to collaborate on its first ever fully ‘circular’ Christmas tree, we jumped at the chance.
Smile Plastics and the Old Vic embarked on a journey to craft something truly exceptional – a 9-foot-tall Christmas tree fashioned entirely from recycled plastic.
The tree itself is a marvel, constructed from 149 carefully cut and finished pieces of recycled plastic in our striking 'Ocean' and 'Kaleido' material. These pieces, varying in size, were artfully assembled to create a tree that resembles a spiraling staircase. Continuing the theme of reuse, the decorations adorning the tree are crafted from recycled Old Vic show programs.
Adding a sustainable twist to their festive celebrations, the Old Vic’s Christmas tree is a testament to the beauty of waste. Standing pride of place in the Penny Bar and Cafe, the tree exemplifies the theatre's commitment to environmental and social responsibility, aiming not only to captivate audiences but also to set a new standard for sustainable practices in the arts.
The tree's journey doesn't conclude with the Christmas season; once the festivities are over, it will be carefully packed away for reuse in the coming years. This vision of a fully circular Christmas tree embodies sustainability in its truest sense – a perpetual symbol of joy and celebration, designed to be enjoyed year after year until the end of its lifecycle.
